Hello, dragonsinger! You have some really nice scenes in your gallery. Like you're telling a story. Maybe you should give it a shot.
One thing , tho. You press on your pencils too much, I guess. The lines overwhelm in your drawings. Maybe you should lighten that a bit. And let the shades define things rather than lines. That's all.
Ya' know, I've been wondering why my more recent art looked a bit different than some of my older pictures. I use far too many dark lines. Thanks for pointing that out to me.
I don't use such dark lines all of the time. I think it's because that's just how I learned to draw, and I see so much line art that's later colored digitally that I figured that's how it must be done. I do have a few pieces in which I use shading rather than lines (sketchbook practicing of portraits), but it's a bit different than my current style and I have to consciously think to do it that way.
Thank you for giving me something important to think about, KingRoach. I must consider how this will affect my work, and where I can use the technique at.
*Abashed* Remembered your first comment, so you get a second reply.
*Edit: A very LONG second reply*
A lot of what I draw comes from stories that I have written, or will write. And as for the rest, it's just something I do, that I prefer having background stories to my pictures rather than just thinking "Hmm, I think I'll draw something like this." The only problem that this brings up is that it gives me far too many stories in my head than I can conceiveably write down. *grins*
As for the current pictures:
Rooftop is based on a Live-Action Role-Play (Like D&D, but with a lot more acting) that my friends next door play based in the White Wolf system. I simply sketched a plausible scene.
Mage Kender is based on a similar LARP. When I'd first joined my RPG group, we were all playing ourselves, but with one addition, that we were supernaturals. Like low-powered mutants, or superheros, ya' know? Anyways, when I myself went off to A&M to college, my game character left the group. But since I really liked my character, I wrote him into a new story that has reached just shy of 100,000 words. The three people in the picture are from that story.
Fighters is a sketch of a D&D character that I played once, plus companions.
Cornered and Bright Wave are part of a story that I've conceived, but will write later when my writing skill improves (it's too important for me to write at an amateurs level).
Blood Moon is based yet again on a LARP, this time one about vampires. We played one game, and then I also wrote a short story about it (plus a chroniclization in 3rd person prose format). So yay! LARP + Story + Picture.
Cantus Noctura is actually a short story. Note the Writing flag that's on it. But please read the disclaimer if you're inclined to peruse it, you might not be interested in that kind of thing.
Myself is just a portrait of myself done very quickly for practice that I'd uploaded due to extenuating circumstances.
And Missing You sounds like a very nice short story. Bah. Now I've got to go and write the bloomin' thing.
Anyways, sorry for posting all of this as a reply to you, it's likely far more information than you wanted to know.
Um, to sum things up, I'm a novice writer as well as a novice artist, doing both as hobbies for myself.
And thanks for checking out my site, Mr. KingRoach. I greatly appreciate it.
You are more than welcome, and I think you are really a promising artist. Keep doing what you're doing, and always open your eyes to your surroundings and other drawn pictures. You will learn a lot.
I started an RP with someone, once, and I actually thought I'd draw it, but the storyline took a course that I couldn't accept, so I stopped it, and that was the only RP for me.. ever. ^^
RPing does give you inspiration for drawings. Just don't forget about other priorities. *thumb up*
Hi Donovan! It's great to have you on here. I'll try to upload some of my art soon. I need to steal Diana's camera one of these days and go at my larger artwork that won't fit in my scanner. I really like your art. I'll get around to reading your short story too, just have a few things to do at the moment. ^^ It'll be awesome to see what all you will come up with.
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that when you have time (I know that's not always the case for a lot of people), try to have your comments be a bit more specific. For example, I've seen a lot of comments of people's art that are nothing more than "Wow, cool, instant fave!"
Artists all like to hear that their art is appreciated, but when a commentor takes time out to say why they liked it, it makes it all the more special.
Been checking out your site, too. Spiffy canines ya' got there.
